Looking for lakes and ponds for sale in Bas-Rhin? Let us be clear from the start: the department is not pond country on the scale of the Sundgau or neighbouring Moselle. Measured against the total area, banks included, a pond’s value depends heavily on its size: small, well-equipped ponds cost more per hectare. The figures concern ponds sold on their own, without a house or a large wood.
On the listings side, 26 properties with a pond are offered on ma-propriete.fr across France as of 2 October 2026, none in Grand Est at that date. Their median asking price is €94,000 for a median size of about 2.6 ha. On the Alsace plain, sand and gravel extraction has dug out many lakes, such as the Baggersee at Illkirch-Graffenstaden, south of Strasbourg. North of the city, in the Petit Ried, some quarries are still worked, while former pits have been converted for swimming and leisure. Fed by the Alsace aquifer, one of the largest in Europe, these deep waters hold pike, zander, carp and wels catfish. Many are managed by municipalities or angling associations.
Further south, between Strasbourg and Sélestat, the Grand Ried forms a broad mosaic of flood meadows, riverine forest and backwaters, largely covered by Natura 2000. Alsace-Moselle local law changes several aspects of buying a pond. Hunting rights are leased by the municipality across its whole territory, and an owner can keep them only in specific cases, notably on lakes and ponds of at least 5 ha or on land of at least 25 ha in a single block. Below that, duck flighting on your own pond belongs to the tenant of the municipal shoot. Also check the livre foncier extract for registered easements and restrictions, and use a notaire familiar with local law.
The general rules still apply: proof that the pond exists lawfully under water law, the distinction between closed and open water for fishing rights, and an inspection of the dam and spillway for a valley pond. For a former gravel pit, ask for the restoration order and check bank stability; if other people swim or fish there, the owner may be held liable in the event of an accident.
