Searching for a forest for sale in Bas-Rhin means accepting a narrow market from the outset: state and communal forests cover most of the wooded land here, and private woodland is split between a very large number of owners. What does sell belongs to three worlds: the sandstone slopes of the Northern Vosges and of the Bruche and Mossig valleys, the lowland woods around Haguenau and in the Ried, and the vine-growing foothills, where chestnut coppice and old orchards intermingle. Most of what is offered consists of small Alsace woodland plots, bought for firewood, for enjoyment or to enlarge a family property.

According to the ma-propriete.fr forest price observatory, built from sales recorded in the French DVF land registry database, no departmental price can be published in Bas-Rhin: Moselle, Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin use the Alsace-Moselle land register (livre foncier), so their sales do not appear in DVF. The closest benchmark is Grand Est, calculated on the region’s seven other departments: a median of €5,498/ha in 2025, across 527 sales, with an average of €6,545/ha. Beech, spruce and silver fir are the department’s main species; the two conifers dominate the slopes of the Donon, the Champ du Feu and the Bruche valley. In the Northern Vosges regional nature park, a cross-border biosphere reserve shared with Germany’s Pfälzerwald, Scots pine and beech divide poor, free-draining sandstone soils between them, with sessile oak also holding its ground.
On the plain, the Forêt de Haguenau, the largest forest massif in Alsace, whose jointly owned core belongs half to the State and half to the town, is the benchmark for its oaks and tall Scots pines. Along the Rhine, the floodplain woods of the Ried, including the Erstein forest nature reserve, combine ash, pedunculate oak, poplar and elm; they are largely protected and harvesting there is regulated. In the foothills around Mollkirch, Barr and Andlau, chestnut grown as coppice yields mainly firewood and posts.
Private woodland in Bas-Rhin is extremely fragmented: countless parcels of a few ares, the product of successive inheritances, are scattered along the Vosges valleys and the foothills. Putting together a coherent forest estate often means buying several lots from different sellers, which takes time and a good grasp of the cadastral layout. Blocks of several dozen hectares in one piece are rare, and they are the ones that carry the most valuable rights for a hunter.
That last point stems from local law. In Bas-Rhin, hunting does not follow ownership: the commune leases the hunting rights in lots for nine-year periods, and the owner of a wood has no automatic right to shoot on it. The rent is shared among owners in proportion to their land unless they have agreed to leave it to the commune. The sale of a wood is signed before a notaire, then entered in the livre foncier kept by the land registry office of the local court: registration is what makes your title enforceable against third parties. Have the register extract checked, along with any recorded easements, rights of way in particular, and the match with the cadastral plan. The neighbours’ right of first refusal on woods under 4 ha and the commune’s pre-emption right where a communal forest adjoins the plot also apply; here, the second situation is common. On the health front, low-altitude spruce has suffered from bark beetles after the recent droughts, and silver fir is turning red on the driest slopes: a conifer woodland for sale in the Bruche valley should therefore be assessed standing, with a forestry consultant, before any offer. The Vosges slopes also make access a key question: a hardened track, a timber stacking area, the option of cable logging. From 20 ha upwards, insist on a valid management plan (plan simple de gestion) and a record of recent fellings.
