Arboriculture covers the production of fruit trees, such as olive farms for sale.
In France, around 2.5 million tonnes of fruit are produced every year on almost 180,000 hectares:
apples cover 37,000 hectares,
walnuts are produced on 20,000 hectares,
17,000 hectares of plum trees
11,000 hectares of peach trees (and nectarines)
and 8,000 hectares of cherry trees.
Olive production from olive trees (in olive groves) is also part of arboriculture in France.

The role of arboriculture
50% of French orchards are located in the Rhône-Mediterranean basin, 25% in the South-West and 7% in the Loire Valley.
France is Europe's 3rd largest fruit producer.
Organic farming accounted for over 25% of acreage in 2019: almost 12,000 tree farms and 52,000 hectares.
It is estimated that one hectare of apple trees employs an average of one person a year, for production, grading and packaging; while an arboriculturist employs around 34 different trades.
