A forest for sale in Haut-Rhin can be found on three very different kinds of ground. In the west, the Thur, Doller, Munster and Kaysersberg valleys climb towards the crests of the Hautes-Vosges, clothed in silver fir, beech and spruce. In the centre, the Alsace plain still holds a few large oak and pine forests on its stony terraces. In the south, the Sundgau and the Alsatian Jura are a patchwork of hills, broadleaved woods and ponds. The communes own most of the forest here; the private share, highly fragmented, mostly changes hands as small woods and forest parcels, bought for firewood, for enjoyment or to round off a family property.

According to the ma-propriete.fr forest price observatory, built from sales recorded in the French DVF land registry database, no departmental price can be published in Haut-Rhin: Moselle, Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin use the Alsace-Moselle land register (livre foncier), so their sales do not appear in DVF. The closest benchmark is Grand Est, calculated on the region’s seven other departments: a median of €5,498/ha in 2025, across 527 sales, with an average of €6,545/ha. In the Vosges valleys, silver fir is the leading species by volume, alongside beech and spruce, much of it planted during the 20th century. The Ballons des Vosges regional nature park covers most of this area, from the Grand Ballon to the edge of the Ballon d’Alsace. The forests are productive on cool slopes, but low-altitude fir and south-facing spruce have clearly suffered from recent droughts and bark beetles. A mountain forest block should be judged on the share of healthy trees, the natural regeneration already in place and the browsing pressure that governs it: red and roe deer nibble young firs, and chamois roam the ridges.
Between Mulhouse and the Rhine, the Harth state forest grows on very dry gravels: the national forestry office (ONF) closely monitors the decline of its oak, hornbeam and Scots pine after recent droughts, and this public forest is a warning for private woods on similar soils. South of Mulhouse, the Sundgau has deeper soils: strips of oak and beech woodland between the fields, where buyers usually acquire a small woodland plot, and damp hollows where ash is retreating because of ash dieback. Towards Ferrette, the Alsatian Jura carries beech woods on limestone, sometimes on steep ground.

Local law gives Haut-Rhin its own buying rules. Ownership is recorded in the livre foncier, and sales in Alsace do not appear in the DVF database: to place a price, rely on a forestry consultant’s opinion and on comparable listings. Buying a wood does not give you the right to hunt it either, as the commune leases hunting in lots for nine years; only the owner of at least 25 ha in one piece may reserve it. On the ground, slope decides everything: check access along forest roads fit for lorries, whether there is a stacking area, and the cost of cable logging, which can swallow a large part of the value of a felling. Inspect the health of the stand, fir by fir if need be, then the obligations attached to the parcels: a management plan (plan simple de gestion) from 20 ha, the neighbours’ right of first refusal on woods under 4 ha, protection zones around drinking-water catchments, and the Natura 2000 sites covering part of the crests, where some works require a prior assessment.
