With turquoise lakes, deep valleys and vin jaune, a B&B for sale in Jura rests on unspoilt countryside and a distinctive wine region. The lake district, from Chalain to Vouglans, and the Hérisson waterfalls draw swimmers, walkers and anglers, while Baume-les-Messieurs, Château-Chalon and the cellars of Arbois bring wine lovers, with the Percée du Vin Jaune festival each winter. The saltworks of Salins-les-Bains, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Pasteur's home town of Dole and the Haut-Jura regional nature park, with the Les Rousses ski area, attract guests from Lyon, Switzerland, Paris and the Benelux.
Guest houses here often occupy former farmhouses, stone winegrowers' houses or period homes near the lakes. This page is for buyers who want to take over a running chambres d'hôtes or start their own table d'hôtes (guest dinners), and for owners preparing to sell. Country houses in Jura sold for a median €186,000 in 2025, above the regional figure, and one sale in ten went above €288,280. A guest house with several bedrooms usually sits beyond that, towards the prestige market, whose regional median is €520,000 over 2021-2025; the department has too few sales for its own figure. Tourist inland municipalities are the benchmark: a median €202,500, up 40.5% since 2021, the sharpest rise of any type of municipality in the department. Lakeside municipalities classed as coastal see very few sales.
The Revermont wine slopes, from Arbois to Lons-le-Saunier via Poligny and Château-Chalon, combine cellars, steep-sided valleys and stone villages, with wine tourists from spring to autumn. The lake district around Clairvaux-les-Lacs, Chalain and Vouglans is busiest in summer. The Haut-Jura, from Les Rousses to Saint-Claude, has two seasons, snow and hiking, and lies close to Geneva. Dole, the plain and the Jura Bresse to the west are quieter and cheaper. Access is via the A39 motorway through Dole and Lons-le-Saunier, the stations of both towns, and Dole-Jura and Geneva airports.
Large-roofed farmhouses, winegrowers' houses with vaulted cellars and limestone homes dominate: have roofs, timbers and cellar damp checked. On the plateaux, insulation and heating weigh heavily on running costs. In mountain areas the loi Montagne limits building, and lakeshore planning rules restrict extensions. The karst limestone calls for care with private septic systems, inspected by the local SPANC service, and the Loue, Doubs and Ain valleys have flood zones. A chambres d'hôtes business is limited to 5 rooms and 15 guests at a time, breakfast included, and must be declared at the mairie (town hall). Serving local wine at dinner requires at least a restaurant licence and a specific permit. See our guide to opening chambres d'hôtes (in French).
The French Jura is far cheaper than its Swiss neighbour. Use two land-registry benchmarks: €186,000 for a local country house and €520,000 for a prestige home in the region; near the lakes or in the vineyards, guest houses sit towards the top. Add works and purchase costs. Our guest house buying guide (in French) runs up to completion before the notaire, the public official who handles property sales.
The lakes fill rooms mainly in summer, sometimes from spring with walkers. Owners stretch the year with autumn wine tourism, the winter vin jaune festival or nearby ski resorts.
