From the citadel of Besançon to the high plateaux near Switzerland, a B&B for sale in Doubs appeals to guests who want mountains, clear rivers and hearty regional food. The Loue valley around Ornans, painted by Courbet, the Saut du Doubs waterfall, Lake Saint-Point and the fir forests draw walkers, anglers and canoeists in summer and cross-country skiers around Métabief in winter. Comté and Mont d'Or cheeses, Morteau sausage and Pontarlier absinthe attract food lovers from Switzerland, Alsace, Lyon and Paris, and the royal saltworks of Arc-et-Senans is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Properties suited to guest rooms are mostly large Comtois farmhouses, village maisons de maître and older valley houses. This page is for buyers of a running chambres d'hôtes business, for people comparing Doubs with neighbouring Jura, and for owners planning to sell. Doubs is the region's most expensive department for country houses: a median €224,920 in 2025, €2,097/m², with the top decile starting at €351,981. A four- or five-bedroom guest house goes beyond that and nears the prestige market, whose regional median is €520,000 over 2021-2025; there are too few local sales for a department figure. Unusually, tourist inland (mountain) municipalities are the dearest, at a median €304,375, yet they have slipped 5.5% since 2021, while deep rural areas gained 11.9%.
The Haut-Doubs, from Pontarlier to Morteau and the Mouthe valley, offers snow, lakes, watchmaking heritage and the Doubs Horloger regional nature park; guests come all year, but cross-border commuters working in Switzerland push prices up. The Loue valley, from Ornans to Mouthier-Haute-Pierre, has characterful villages, cliffs and trout streams, busiest in summer. Around Besançon, the lower plateaux attract city, business and cultural visitors at more moderate prices. Access is via the A36, Besançon Franche-Comté TGV station on the Rhine-Rhône line, and Geneva and Basel-Mulhouse airports.
The Comtois farmhouse puts home, cowshed and barn under one vast roof, sometimes around a tuyé, a huge chimney once used to smoke meat: plenty of space for guest rooms, but insulation, heating and roofing must be costed, as winters are long. In mountain areas the loi Montagne restricts building. The limestone ground, riddled with sinkholes, makes private septic systems tricky, so read the SPANC inspection report closely; check flood risk in the Doubs and Loue valleys. A chambres d'hôtes business is limited to 5 rooms and 15 guests at a time, breakfast included, and must be declared at the mairie (town hall). Serving wine at the table d'hôtes (guest dinners) requires at least a restaurant licence and a specific permit. See our guide to opening chambres d'hôtes (in French).
Yes: demand from households working in Switzerland keeps the Haut-Doubs above the department's €224,920 country-house median, though well-kept properties also resell more easily. For a tighter budget, look at the Loue valley or the plateaux around Besançon. Our guest house buying guide (in French) covers each stage up to completion before the notaire, the public official who handles property sales.
Lakes and rivers in summer and Nordic skiing in winter give two seasons, but spring and autumn are quiet outside Besançon. Test your assumptions with our B&B profitability and tax simulator (in French) and have an accountant review them.
The new owner declares the business at the town hall in their own name and checks the room limit, mandatory surveys, septic inspection and any drinks licence transfer. Sellers can list their property with us.
