A gîte for sale in Lozère is a bet on wide-open nature tourism: the Tarn and Jonte gorges, the Méjean and Sauveterre causses, Mont Lozère, the Aubrac, the Margeride and the Cévennes valleys. The Cévennes national park and the Aubrac regional nature park cover much of the department, and the Causses and Cévennes are a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape. Walkers on the Stevenson trail and the Way of St James, anglers and families seeking cool summers make up most of the clientele.
Properties suited to holiday letting include vaulted causse farmhouses, granite or schist hamlet houses, farms with barns and estates with several dwellings, sometimes on several hectares. This page is for buyers of a house with gîte, for those taking over a trading business and for owners planning a sale. Set up an email alert (in French) to hear about new listings.

Lozère is unusual: in tourist inland communes, country houses sold for a median €140,500 between 2020 and 2025, less than in the deep countryside (€174,000), because these mountain and causse villages hold many old houses needing work. Prices there rose by 11.4% between 2021 and 2025, a sign of growing demand. A gîte project can start on a modest budget, plus works. A property with several dwellings, land and outbuildings belongs to the large-home market, for which only the regional benchmark (median €640,000) is available.
The south draws most visitors: the Tarn gorges around Sainte-Enimie and La Malène, the Jonte gorges, the Causse Méjean and Florac, gateway to the Cévennes. The Cévennes valleys around Mont Lozère and Villefort attract guests seeking heritage and quiet. To the west, the Aubrac plateau, with its stone shepherds' huts (burons) and lakes, lives from walking and fishing, with a short season but a strong image. The Margeride in the north, around Langogne, is quieter and cheaper. Mende, Marvejols and Florac provide shops and services. The toll-free A75 motorway runs along the west, and the Aubrac and Cévennes rail lines serve Marvejols, Langogne and Villefort.
Building stone follows the geology: limestone and vaults on the causses, schist and stone slab roofs (lauze) in the Cévennes, granite in the Margeride, basalt on the Aubrac. Thick walls suit a gîte, but insulation, heating and roofing weigh heavily in a harsh climate; see our guide to converting a barn into a gîte (in French). In the Cévennes, intense autumn rain can cause flash floods: read the risk report attached to the compromis de vente, the preliminary sale contract. The Mountain Law (loi Montagne) restricts building, and the core of the national park has its own rules. Private septic systems are inspected by the local SPANC service. Each gîte is a meublé de tourisme (furnished holiday let) that must be registered. The law of 19 November 2024 provides for a national online service for this, which is not yet in place and is expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2026.
In 2025 the median country house sold for €166,850, and one sale in ten was below €85,620. Many need renovation, so add insulation, heating and fitting out the units; our article on what a gîte costs (in French) helps.
Summer and spring holidays bring most stays, autumn draws walkers and winter is quiet. Returns depend on weeks let and fixed costs: test your figures with our holiday rental simulator (in French).
A compromis de vente is followed by the final deed signed before a notaire, the public officer handling property sales. If the name, customers and website are transferred, part of the deal may be a fonds de commerce (business goodwill) separate from the property.
