A hunting property for sale in Puy-de-Dôme can be found on very different kinds of land. In the west, the Combrailles and the Artense unfold hedged farmland, oak and conifer woods, peat bogs and ponds, where roe deer and wild boar dominate. In the centre, the Chaîne des Puys, the Monts Dore and the Cézallier add volcanic uplands, with chamois and mouflon introduced to the Sancy massif. In the east, Livradois and Forez, joined in a regional nature park, carry large fir and beech forests where roe deer, wild boar and, in some areas, red deer are hunted. In between, the Limagne, a cereal plain around Clermont-Ferrand and Riom, remains small game country. Properties range from a wood of a few hectares to a wooded estate with farmhouse and pond; our shoots, woods and estates on the market bring together offers from private sellers, estate agents and notaires.

Below this introduction, a data block presents the forest prices recorded in the department and the official game bag figures, largely led by roe deer and wild boar. The rest of the page describes the two main types of ground in Puy-de-Dôme and what to check before buying, from how hunting is organised in the commune to damage in the meadows.

The price of a hunting estate in Puy-de-Dôme

A hunting estate is rarely valued with a single figure: its price adds up the value of the woodland, the ponds, the buildings and the shooting facilities. The statistics below give benchmarks for wooded land and ponds, based on sales actually recorded.

According to the ma-propriete.fr forest price observatory, built from sales recorded in the French DVF land registry database, the median price of a hectare of forest in Puy-de-Dôme was €4,806/ha in 2025, across 150 sales, with an average of €5,258/ha. That puts the department above the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes median (€4,057/ha) and below the national median (€4,936/ha). Year on year, the departmental median moved by +19.2%. Over the more robust 2020-2025 period, 695 sales give a median of €4,231/ha for a median plot size of 3.2 ha.

Nationally, the price per hectare rises with size: the large properties that appeal to hunters sell for more per hectare than medium-sized woods.

Ponds trade at a very different level: a median of €17,520/ha for the 15 ponds sold without buildings in Puy-de-Dôme between 2020 and 2025†, a sample too small to be representative; regionally, the median reaches €15,847/ha.

On the listings side, 18 hunting properties are offered on ma-propriete.fr across France as of 2 October 2026, none in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes at that date. Their median asking price is €888,000 for a median size of about 68 ha. These asking prices apply to complete properties, often with buildings, a pond or hunting rights: they cannot be compared directly with DVF medians per hectare.

Game in Puy-de-Dôme: official game bag figures

The game bag records published by the French Biodiversity Agency (OFB) measure hunting pressure and, indirectly, the presence of big game. In Puy-de-Dôme, 595 red deer were taken in the 2024-2025 season, about 0.7% of the national total, alongside 7,008 roe deer and 5,677 wild boar.

Hunting property for sale in Puy-de-Dôme: western farmland and upland forests

Combrailles and Artense: hedgerows, woods and wetlands

In the north-west, between the Sioule valley and the Creuse border, the Combrailles form a plateau of hedged farmland cut by gorges, where hedgerows, oak woods and Douglas fir plantations make up fragmented but well-stocked ground. Roe deer are everywhere, wild boar are hunted in driven days in the gorges and on wooded slopes, and in season woodcock draw hunters with pointing dogs. Further south, the Artense, on the edge of the Cantal, is a land of glacier-worn granite knolls, peat bogs and ponds, where wildfowl add to the big game. Properties often come as a farm with its woods, or a hunting wood of a few dozen hectares; check that the plots are contiguous, as hedged country quickly breaks a shoot into pieces. If a pond is part of your plans, see our ponds to buy in Puy-de-Dôme.

Monts Dore, Livradois and Forez: upland hunting

In the Monts Dore, chamois and mouflon, introduced to the massif, are stalked under a cull plan, partly on summer pastures and even in the Chaudefour valley nature reserve, part of which remains open to hunting; heavy tourist use around the Sancy also means sharing the ground with walkers and skiers. East of the Limagne, the Livradois and the Monts du Forez carry fir and beech forests and managed spruce plantations, holding roe deer, wild boar and, in places, red deer; these are extensive wooded massifs, often linked to old farms, where a hunting property can cover several dozen hectares. On the plain, the Limagne remains partridge, pheasant and hare country, on arable ground where buying opportunities are limited. The Monts du Forez are shared with the Loire, whose hunting grounds in the Loire round out the choice.

Before buying in Puy-de-Dôme: hunting rights, cull plans and fencing

In Puy-de-Dôme, organisation varies from one commune to the next: local hunting societies, ACCAs (approved municipal hunting associations) where they have been set up, and private shoots. Before signing, ask at the town hall which system applies: in an ACCA commune, a wood below the opt-out threshold, at least 20 ha in one block, stays hunted by the association, whereas elsewhere you can hunt it yourself, lease it or place it with the local society. Big game other than wild boar is subject to a cull plan: ask the seller about the roe deer, red deer, chamois or mouflon allocations of recent seasons, which say a great deal about the quality of the ground. Wild boar damage to hay meadows and Limagne crops is another matter: the federation compensates farmers, but a poorly managed shoot exposes its holder to friction with the farming neighbours.

If you are considering an enclosed wood, check that the fencing complies: the act of 2 February 2023 limits fences in natural areas to 1.20 m in height, requires a 30 cm gap beneath the wire and makes them subject to upgrading before 1 January 2027 if they date from 1993 or later. Our article on bringing an enclosure into line details the procedure and the exemptions.

Hunting offers in Puy-de-Dôme are still few on ma-propriete.fr; they come from private sellers, estate agents and notaires, and an email alert set to your preferred size and budget flags each new listing. Selling a shoot? You can publish it on the site. For a forestry-led project, see our woods and forests to buy in Puy-de-Dôme; to compare with the Cantal or the Allier, look at the hunting estates and grounds of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
