The Gers is winegrowing Gascony: the Armagnac vineyard and its three terroirs, the Saint-Mont appellation, a share of Madiran and Pacherenc, and above all the huge Côtes de Gascogne IGP, export champion of fresh whites. A vineyard for sale in the Gers is often a complete farm — vines, land, Gascon buildings — in one of the South-West's most endearing departments.
The Gers market is a growers' market: surfaces free up as retirements come, prices remain among France's gentlest for an organised vineyard, and the Gascogne supply chain gives whites a contracted outlet.
The Bas-Armagnac, on tawny sands, makes the finest eaux-de-vie and concentrates patrimonial value (estates with cellars and stocks); the Ténarèze and Haut-Armagnac complete the area. Hillside Saint-Mont is moving upmarket on its old varieties; Gascogne unrolls its mechanisable colombard, the vineyard's economic heart.
A particularity of Armagnac transfers: stocks of ageing eaux-de-vie, which can represent a major share of value. Their inventory and appraisal are a prerequisite to any negotiation.
