Historic cradle of malbec, Cahors has regained world fame in Argentina's wake: the Lot's valleys and causses now attract importers, investors and young winemakers alike. A vineyard for sale in the Lot still trades at values out of step with the grape's recovered reputation.
Between the valley terraces and the high causses, the appellation offers two styles and two markets; the Coteaux du Quercy, to the south, complete the supply with entry-priced cabernet franc.
The valley terraces, from Puy-l'Évêque to Luzech, carry the mechanisable surfaces and constituted estates; the higher, leaner causses sign the age-worthy cuvées that rebuilt the appellation's name. The price gap between the two stays moderate: a well-exposed causse is arguably the South-West's best qualitative bargain.
Lot-valley and Saint-Cirq-Lapopie tourism feeds direct sales, and riverside cellar doors are valued accordingly. To watch: vineyard condition, as the appellation has known grubbing-up and fallows to reclaim.
