Sparsely populated and heavily wooded, Meuse is big game country, and finding hunting property for sale in Meuse starts with choosing your ground. In the west, the Argonne lines up oak and beech woods on gaize, a local siliceous rock, and red deer are firmly established; in the centre, the forests of the former Verdun battlefield and the Côtes de Meuse ridge overlook the valley; in the east, the Woëvre spreads its damp oak woods and ponds up to the Lorraine regional nature park; in the south, the Barrois offers wooded limestone plateaus around Bar-le-Duc and Commercy. Wild boar, very numerous, are the main quarry of driven days everywhere. The A4 motorway and the Meuse TGV station bring this country within reach of Paris, Reims and Metz. Here you will find the big game estates and shooting woods for sale in the department, from large forests with a lodge to medium-sized woods.

The data section that follows sets out forest and pond prices recorded in Meuse and the big game culls measured by the OFB. We then describe the hunting country of Meuse and the rules that matter before buying: ACCA associations and the opt-out threshold, wild boar damage, the legacy of the First World War and fencing.

The price of a hunting estate in Meuse

A hunting estate is rarely valued with a single figure: its price adds up the value of the woodland, the ponds, the buildings and the shooting facilities. The statistics below give benchmarks for wooded land and ponds, based on sales actually recorded.

According to the ma-propriete.fr forest price observatory, built from sales recorded in the French DVF land registry database, the median price of a hectare of forest in Meuse was €5,118/ha in 2025*, across 73 sales, with an average of €5,411/ha. That puts the department below the Grand Est median (€5,498/ha) and above the national median (€4,936/ha). Year on year, the departmental median moved by +35.1%: a change to read with caution on fewer than a hundred sales, where a few large estates can shift the median. Over the more robust 2020-2025 period, 312 sales give a median of €3,744/ha for a median plot size of 4.0 ha.

Nationally, the price per hectare rises with size: the large properties that appeal to hunters sell for more per hectare than medium-sized woods.

Ponds trade at a very different level: a median of €21,376/ha for the 20 ponds sold without buildings in Meuse between 2020 and 2025†, a sample too small to be representative; regionally, the median reaches €30,112/ha.

On the listings side, 18 hunting properties are offered on ma-propriete.fr across France as of 2 October 2026, none in Grand Est at that date. Their median asking price is €888,000 for a median size of about 68 ha. These are advertised prices for whole properties, sometimes with a house or a pond, not recorded sale prices per hectare like those in the DVF database.

Game in Meuse: official game bag figures

Hunting property for sale in Meuse: Argonne, Verdun country and the Woëvre

The Argonne and the Verdun forests: red deer and wild boar

The Meuse side of the Argonne, between Clermont-en-Argonne, Varennes-en-Argonne and the boundary with Marne, forms an unbroken massif where red deer are closely monitored and managed across the whole massif under the departmental game management plan. Further east, the Montfaucon and Mort-Homme woods, then the state forest of Verdun, cover the former front line of the First World War; replanted after the conflict, they hold plenty of big game. Hunting is by driven days over large blocks, with high seats and rides to maintain. A hunting estate here is judged on its area in one block, the safety of its shooting lines and its relations with the neighbouring public forests, where the hunting is leased out by the national forest office (ONF). The Argonne massif continues to the west: compare with the hunting properties of Marne.

Côtes de Meuse, Woëvre and Barrois: more varied ground

The Côtes de Meuse, from Saint-Mihiel to Hattonchâtel, carry beech and oak woods on their slopes above the mirabelle plum orchards. At their foot, the Woëvre is a clay plain where woods, meadows and fish ponds intermingle: wild boar and roe deer are driven there, and duck are shot on some ponds, in a pond country best known for the Étang de Lachaussée. To the south, the Barrois, from Bar-le-Duc to Gondrecourt-le-Château, adds limestone plateaus covered with large communal and private forests, cut by the Ornain and Saulx valleys. These areas mostly offer a medium-sized hunting ground mixing woodland and open land, often attached to a farm. For a property where water matters, see our ponds for sale in the Woëvre and Argonne.

ACCA, game damage and wartime soils: what to check

Meuse is one of the departments where ACCA associations are compulsory, and its opt-out threshold starts from the legal minimum of 20 ha in one block, which an order can raise to as much as 60 ha: ask which figure applies there. A wood below that threshold is therefore hunted by the commune’s ACCA; as a buyer, you can ask to become a member if your land reaches at least a tenth of that threshold. Only holdings above it can be withdrawn to form a private shoot, following the procedure and timetable laid down by law. Check this with the Meuse hunters’ federation, which administers the ACCAs, before settling on your price: it changes the hunting value of a property profoundly.

Wild boar are the second issue: the forests worst hit by damage are classed as “black spots”, where the departmental plan restricts supplementary feeding and imposes culls of females, and a ground that does not cull enough may be asked to contribute to compensation. Along the old front, from the Butte de Vauquois to the Saint-Mihiel salient, the soil still holds munitions: any game crop, new ride or high-seat footing must be prepared with care. Finally, if the property is fenced, the act of 2 February 2023 requires fences raised 30 cm off the ground, no higher than 1.20 m and brought into line before 1 January 2027; our page on the law on woodland fencing sets out its scope.

Hunting grounds in Meuse listed on ma-propriete.fr are offered by owners, estate agents and notaires. Sort them by size or price, switch on an alert to follow new properties and post your listing if you are selling. If timber matters more to you than game, see our Meuse woods and forests for sale; to widen your search towards the Ardennes, Vosges or Alsace, browse the hunting grounds across Grand Est.
