Buying a poultry farm for sale in Meuse means taking to wide farming country: thinly populated, the department is made up of large mixed crop and livestock holdings on which the poultry unit acts as an added income. You will find farmhouse houses with an outdoor range, table-bird units delivering batches to a producer group, and flocks of laying hens whose eggs go to Verdun, Bar-le-Duc or Commercy. Listings come from farmers preparing their handover, from rural agencies and from notaries' offices, with the buildings and areas set out in detail. The department takes its place in our France-wide listing of poultry farms for sale.

What a listing leaves out is here: the level of land values in Meuse, the districts where buildings come free, the technical points to check on a poultry house and the regulatory steps that go with livestock farming. If your project is still taking shape, our white paper « Créer une exploitation agricole » (in French) sets out every stage, from legal form to cash-flow forecast.

Farmland prices around a poultry farm in Meuse (55) in 2025

Land remains the largest item when buying a poultry farm. According to sales recorded by the French tax administration (DVF, vineyards excluded), the median price of agricultural land in Meuse (55) stood at €5,000/ha in 2025, with an average of €5,026/ha across 153 sales; 80% of transactions fall between €4,000 and €6,191/ha, against a national median of €5,307/ha.

The SAFER benchmark of land values (2025 figures) puts vacant land and pasture at €4,940/ha (+2.1% year on year, -6.4% over ten years), against a national average of €6,460/ha; land already let sells around 17% lower.

Value is decided mainly away from the fields. What counts is the poultry building and its year of construction, insulation, ventilation, heating, silos and feed line, the manure pit or pad, the packing room, then the fencing and shelters on the range. The outlet carries value too, whether an agreement with a production organisation or a customer base built on local markets and shops. To place an asking price, lean on our land price observatory and our financial calculators.

What sets poultry farms for sale in Meuse apart

What to examine on site

Buildings on offer range from a label rouge house with grass range to a converted farm volume, by way of movable free-range units on pasture and, less often, a floor-laying room. During the visit, buyers check the frame and roof, insulation, air renewal, the heating system, the state of the floors and the biosecurity entry room, frost protection on the water supply, and access for delivery and collection lorries. On a broiler farm, the space available around the building decides value as much as the covered area, because it governs any plan to enlarge.

On an egg farm, the flock is valued on its stage of lay and health status, equipment on its age: nests, drinkers, grader, cold room, plucking gear for farms that slaughter. Because holdings in Meuse are often extensive, the poultry unit only makes sense inside a wider system with its cereals and grassland. Faced with a holding sold together with a dwelling house and land, ask for the production buildings, the house and the ground to be separated, since each is financed over a different term.

The districts of the department and what comes free

The Woëvre, a damp plain dotted with ponds between Étain and Fresnes-en-Woëvre, and the Côtes de Meuse, known for their mirabelle orchards, form a belt of small and medium holdings where diversification is common. The Barrois, around Bar-le-Duc and Ligny-en-Barrois, and the cereal plateaux of the Verdun country carry arable systems well suited to indoor units fed from close by. The Argonne, more wooded and hedged, and the north of the department towards Stenay and Montmédy keep a strong grassland character.

Land prices are among the most moderate in the region, which puts complete holdings within reach that would be unaffordable elsewhere. Thin population remains the main limit for a project built on direct selling: a chicken farm built on direct selling has to assemble its custom from the department's towns and from passing trade. Areas near the roads towards Metz, Nancy and Champagne offer the best prospects on that score.

Regulation, animal health and land: the checks to run

Depending on flock size, a poultry unit falls under declaration, registration or authorisation as a classified installation under French environmental law; the buyer notifies the change of operator to the prefecture and reads the order in force, which fixes distances, operating requirements and the conditions for any extension. On the health side, the work covers the biosecurity plan, the empty period between batches, traceability and the housing duties that apply during avian influenza episodes, a real concern where ranges sit close to wetlands used by wild birds.

Then examine effluent storage capacity and whether the spreading plan matches the land actually controlled, together with any classification as a nitrate vulnerable zone. A holding that processes or packs must pass on its health approval without a break in activity. Finally, the share of rented ground is high here: the rural lease continues with the new farmer subject to the landlord's agreement, and the deal goes through the structures control, the French authorisation regime for taking over farmland, and through SAFER.

Behind each listing stands a farmer handing over, a rural estate agency or a notary's office in the department. Use the filters for area, price and production, save an alert to follow new postings, and then extend your search to the poultry farms for sale in Grand Est.
