Roussillon is a vineyard of character: the schists of Maury and the Agly, the vertiginous terraces of Banyuls and Collioure facing the Mediterranean, the slopes of Côtes du Roussillon-Villages and the Aspres. A vineyard for sale in Pyrénées-Orientales attracts a generation of winemakers hunting old carignan and schist-grown grenache.
The Roussillon paradox is the opportunity: terroirs of world-recognised potential, some of the Midi's cheapest land, and numerous retirements freeing quality vines — in a context where drought nonetheless demands a rigorous reading of every file.
The Agly valley (Maury, Rasiguères, Latour-de-France) is the qualitative epicentre, with its old schist vines; the Aspres offer larger ensembles on pebbles and clay; the Côte Vermeille, from Collioure to Cerbère, holds unique terraces whose heroic farming justifies prices of their own.
Mind the water: the department suffers severe droughts, and a borehole, network access or irrigation rights have become first-order value elements — sometimes more than the appellation itself.
