Nièvre owes its forestry reputation to oak. The Bertranges state forest, east of La Charité-sur-Loire, long supplied charcoal to the ironworks built along its streams in the 18th century; since converted to high forest, it now produces fine-grained oak much sought after by coopers. The Bellary forest, near Châteauneuf-Val-de-Bargis, and many private woods in the centre of the department share the same soils and species. For a buyer, the proportion of stave-quality or veneer oak, the age of the stands and the balance between high forest and coppice explain most of the difference in value from one forest to the next.
On the granite uplands of the Morvan, shared with Yonne, Côte-d’Or and Saône-et-Loire, the forest is mainly private and often fragmented. Douglas fir grows fast here and makes a profitable production forest, harvested by clear-felling and then replanted. Spruce, by contrast, has been wiped out by bark beetles, and most of the affected plots have been replanted with Douglas, sometimes mixed with larch or broadleaves. Start with access. In the Morvan, slopes, waterlogged winter soils and narrow lanes make extraction and timber lorry traffic difficult; a loading area and a sound track are worth real money. Then have the standing volume and its quality assessed by a forestry expert: in an oak wood, a few dozen veneer-grade trees can account for a decisive share of the price. For a small Nièvre wood of less than 4 ha, wooded neighbours and the commune hold a right of first refusal that must be cleared before the sale.
