Looking for a forest for sale in Jura? The department steps down in tiers from the Swiss border to the Saône plain. In the west, around Dole and in the Jura part of the Bresse, oak dominates lowland woods for which the Chaux forest is the great reference. In the centre, the Revermont, the wine country and the Petite Montagne alternate limestone hillsides, dry grassland and broadleaved woods. In the east, the Champagnole and Nozeroy plateaus, then the Haut-Jura from Morez to Saint-Claude, belong to fir and spruce. According to the ma-propriete.fr forest price observatory, built from sales recorded in the French DVF land registry database, the median price of a hectare of forest in Jura was €4,003/ha in 2025*, across 71 sales, with an average of €4,440/ha. That puts the department below the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté median (€4,715/ha) and below the national median (€4,936/ha). Compared with 2024, the median changed by −21.6%, a movement to interpret with care given the number of sales. Over the more robust 2020-2025 period, 360 sales give a median of €5,309/ha for a median plot size of 2.9 ha.

Prices vary widely: in 2025, one forest in ten sold for less than €1,872/ha in Jura and one in ten for more than €7,391/ha. The bottom of the range is usually small coppice woods or plots with poor access; the top is valuable stands or properties whose price includes hunting rights, a pond or good access.

Between the Doubs and the Loue rivers, the Chaux forest is one of the largest broadleaved forests in France. Mostly state-owned, it is not for sale, but the private woods around it share its soils and species: pedunculate and sessile oak, hornbeam and beech, long managed as coppice-with-standards and now often being converted to high forest. Further south, the Jura Bresse mixes small oak woods, wet meadows and ponds; wooded plots there are scattered and seldom in a single block. In these areas the quality of the oak makes most of the value: a wood full of straight, sound logs has nothing in common with a coppice worn down by repeated firewood cutting.
On the plateaus and in the mountains, silver fir and spruce form uneven-aged or selection forests, worked through small successive fellings. The Joux state forest, near Champagnole, is regarded as one of the finest fir forests in France; higher up, the Risoux, towards Bois-d’Amont and Bellefontaine, supplies violin makers with tonewood spruce whose growth rings are very tight. These mountain conifers, provided they are sawn within the massif, can carry the “Bois du Jura” designation of origin. For a buyer, this production forest is judged on stand structure, the share of large timber and the network of tracks. Much of these mountains lies within the Haut-Jura regional nature park and Natura 2000 sites: check the applicable constraints before planning any new track or major felling.
Most sales cover a few hectares: a fir plot ready for harvest, a broadleaved wood on the edge of a village, a strip of woodland on the Revermont hillsides. The communes own a large share of the department’s forests, which limits the supply of large private blocks; when a forest property of several dozen hectares does come up, it often combines woodland, meadows and sometimes a farmhouse. In the mountains, spruce is the main concern. The spruce bark beetle, long confined to low-altitude plantations, has for several years been causing heavy mortality even in the high-altitude forests of the Haut-Jura. Before buying, have the affected trees counted, the remaining sound volume estimated and the cost of any replanting worked out; fir, better suited to the climate, also suffers in dry summers on thin limestone soils. In the lowlands, look at the ash, hit by ash dieback, and at pedunculate oak on soils that are drying out.
For a plot of less than 4 ha in Jura, wooded neighbours and the commune must be notified of the sale so that they can exercise their right of first refusal. On the Revermont slopes or in the steep-sided reculées valleys, make sure timber lorries can reach the wood and that there is a loading area: a landlocked wood is hard to sell and expensive to harvest. Finally, once a fir or oak property in Jura reaches 20 ha, it must have a management plan (plan simple de gestion): ask the seller for it and check when it expires.
