Around Baugé-en-Anjou, the Baugeois is the most wooded part of Maine-et-Loire. The state forest of Chandelais, once held by the Counts of Anjou, is managed as broadleaved high forest dominated by oak and beech, interspersed with ponds, wooded heath and limestone grassland. The forest of Monnaie, partly state-owned, combines high forest, heath and wetland. Around these two public forests, many private woods combine oak and chestnut, pine on the sands and poplar in the valley bottoms.
