What is a stud farm?

A stud farm is a property where breeding stock, stallions (males) and brood mares (mares) are bred for the reproduction and improvement of horse breeds. It is therefore a farm, but its activity is dedicated to breeding horses.

The foals born on the farm are then sold after breaking-in and can be sold to private individuals or professionals for sport, competition or purely for leisure.

Genetics are very important to a stud farm. It is the quality of the sire and dam stock that enables the production of quality foals.

There are private stud farms and public stud farms (national stud farms), which play a role under government supervision to control horse breeding and improve the quality of horses in France. Present throughout France, the National Studs are now mainly devoted to disseminating knowledge about the equestrian industry.

Horse breeders are often involved in dressage, preparation, training and development in addition to their breeding activities.

A large number of stud farms are located in Normandy, France's most emblematic equestrian region.

What are the characteristics of a stud farm?

At a stud farm, stallions are offered for service at the breeding stations. Many stud farms have mares attached. There are also insemination centres for the horses.

A stud farm requires a large area of land to accommodate and feed the horses. Meadows and fields must be properly fenced and gated to ensure the safety of horses and neighbours.

Buildings must have individual boxes or stalls, not forgetting grassland shelters.

You'll also need storage for your equipment and fodder for your horses.

You also need to think about the water supply. A well or borehole will be a real plus for your horse-breeding project.

Regulations governing stud farms

You need health approval to be involved in horse breeding. The Institut Français du Cheval et de l'Equitation (IFFCE) is the public body responsible for equine regulations.

All horses must be officially identified from the day they are born and fitted with a microchip.
