The Charente market was long one of France's most dynamic, carried by worldwide demand for cognac. After several years of sustained planting it is entering a consolidation phase: sale volumes have receded and prices are adjusting — a window of opportunity for long-term buyers.
Around Segonzac, the Grande Champagne and its soft chalk soils produce the most sought-after eaux-de-vie: its land clearly tops the departmental hierarchy. Then come Borderies, Petite Champagne and Fins Bois, covering most of the vineyard, followed by the more peripheral Bons Bois.
A Charente estate's value is tightly linked to its purchase contract with a trading house: contracted surfaces, authorised yields and campaign prospects weigh as much as the cru itself. Distillation assets (stills, ageing cellars) form a separate asset class, to be appraised on their own.
