The place to look for lakes and ponds for sale in Haute-Loire is the plateaus of the Velay, the Yssingelais, the Mézenc and the Margeride, where small fishing ponds come with a farm or a leisure plot. The Devès plateau, between the Allier and the Loire, is dotted with old volcanic explosion craters. Lac du Bouchet, in the communes of Le Bouchet-Saint-Nicolas and Cayres, is the best-known example: this maar, fed by rain and a few springs, has belonged to the department since the 19th century and is a listed site. East of Le Puy-en-Velay, Lac de Saint-Front also fills a maar, and fishing there is run by its owner. To the north-west, near Allègre, the Mont Bar peat bog, a Natura 2000 site, formed inside a crater.
Private ponds are more modest. On the Haut-Lignon plateau, around Tence and Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, as in the Margeride, they are small fishing or watering reservoirs fed by a spring or stream, stocked with trout or carp depending on altitude and water temperature. Large reservoirs serve other purposes: the Lavalette dam on the Lignon du Velay is the main drinking water source for the Saint-Étienne conurbation.
Buyers are often anglers from the Saint-Étienne area, Le Puy-en-Velay or Clermont-Ferrand, drawn by cool waters and trout, and families looking for a plateau house with a pond for the summer. Natura 2000 sites also protect rivers holding freshwater pearl mussels and white-clawed crayfish, as well as lakes and rivers used by otters.
For buyers, the consequences are concrete: a pond connected to a watercourse must have been declared or authorised, must neither warm nor clog the river downstream, and must respect ecological continuity; draining is prepared with the DDT, the departmental territorial office. The Loire-Bretagne SDAGE strictly limits the creation of new ponds, so an old, lawful pond is worth far more than a plan to dig one. Also check the fishing regime, closed or open water, which decides whether a fishing licence is needed.
At an altitude where winter lasts, inspect the dam, spillway and sluice or outlet after the thaw, when damage becomes visible. Measure the spring’s flow at the end of summer and ask whether the pond dropped during recent droughts.
