If you are after a forest for sale in Aisne, the supply is split between three landscapes. In the north, Thiérache keeps oak and beech woods set in hedged farmland, around Hirson and Saint-Michel. In the centre, the Laonnois and the Soissonnais alternate between arable plateaux and wooded slopes, in the shadow of the large public forests of Saint-Gobain and Retz. In the Oise and Aisne valleys, finally, poplar plantations form a market of their own. That puts the department below the Hauts-de-France median (€8,787/ha) and above the national median (€4,936/ha). Year on year, the departmental median moved by +0.1%. Over the more robust 2020-2025 period, 647 sales give a median of €5,915/ha for a median plot size of 2.6 ha.

Prices vary widely: in 2025, one forest in ten sold for less than €4,000/ha in Aisne and one in ten for more than €11,235/ha. The cheapest sales mostly involve young coppice, landlocked or steep plots; the dearest involve harvestable high forest, leisure woods near towns or properties with a pond.

The Retz state forest, around Villers-Cotterêts, is the great beech forest of the south of the department; together with the forests of Saint-Gobain and Coucy-Basse, between Laon, Chauny and La Fère, it sets the quality benchmarks for beech and oak. These public forests are not for sale, but the private woods along their edges share the same local know-how and the same outlets. In Thiérache, the Hirson and Saint-Michel forests, both Natura 2000 sites, extend into a network of private woods of pedunculate oak, beech and ash, often managed as coppice-with-standards.
On the Chemin des Dames ridge, the Vauclair forest tells a different story: flattened by the fighting, it was replanted after the war, and its stands still bear the mark of that reconstruction. In the valleys, poplar is king: the former Picardy region ranks among France’s leading poplar-growing areas, and Aisne accounts for a large share of it. Most transactions involve woods of a few hectares: a coppice woodland plot taken over by a neighbour, a copse on the open plain of the Vermandois, a wooded slope above one of the Soissonnais valleys. A forest estate of several dozen hectares is scarcer; one may turn up in Thiérache as well as in the south of the department, towards the Valois and the Brie, within reach of the Paris region via the N2 and the A4.

Along the former front, from the Chemin des Dames to the Soissonnais, trees may contain metal fragments: sawmills reject or mark down such logs, and an optimistic volume estimate takes no account of the defect. Unexploded munitions still come to the surface during works; any device found must be reported to the town hall or the gendarmerie, who call in the bomb disposal service. Ask the seller about the wood’s history and have the standing volume assessed by a forestry consultant who knows the area.
Ash, plentiful in Thiérache and in the valleys, is badly hit by ash dieback: a stand rich in ash loses part of its value and calls for sanitation fellings.
